NEITI Collaborates with International Community to Boost Extractive Sector Transparency

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) is ready to collaborate with the international community to advance the oil, gas, and mining sectors. NEITI expressed this readiness during a meeting with prominent diplomatic missions in Nigeria. The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, highlighted the agency’s commitment to offering technical assistance, pursuing governance reforms, and deepening its involvement in Nigeria’s extractive industries. NEITI aims to open and reposition the solid minerals sector for public engagement and implement groundbreaking reforms. The agency’s international affiliations, civil society partnerships, and government ownership are considered major strengths. NEITI will prioritize the solid minerals industry, which currently contributes less than one percent to the nation’s GDP. The Belgian, Canadian, and Australian embassies have shown renewed interest and support for NEITI’s work. They closely follow NEITI’s reports and activities in the extractive sector and commend the agency’s transparency and accountability efforts. The Kingdom of Belgium pledged support to NEITI, particularly in capacity building and attracting investors to the solid minerals sector. Canada, as a supporting country to the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), expressed willingness to collaborate with NEITI in information sharing, training, capacity building, and technical support. The Australian High Commission also welcomed Nigeria’s economic diversification policy and expressed confidence in NEITI’s ability to provide reliable information and data in the extractive industries. NEITI, established in 2004, is the key anti-corruption agency responsible for promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria’s oil, gas, and mining industries. It is a member of the global EITI implemented in 57 countries.
