Alake Calls for Modernization and Innovation in Mining Agencies
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, embarked on a recent series of visits to various agencies under the ministry with a view to advocating for reforms and increased efficiency in alignment with the government’s agenda. Dr. Alake placed particular emphasis on the need for these agencies to embrace innovation in their operations and to generate internal revenue.
During his visit to the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO), the Minister commended the agency for its role as the custodian of mineral titles. However, he urged the agency to address perceived inadequacies and improve its efficiency. The Director-General of MCO, Engr. Obadiah Nkom, expressed delight at hosting the Minister and highlighted the agency’s efforts to digitize its operations through an online platform. While the new platform led to a significant increase in applications, there have been challenges with processing due to backlogs from the old system. Dr. Alake urged the agency to enhance its productivity and address any infractions that may affect the ministry.
At the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Dr. Abdulrasak Garba discussed the agency’s role in generating geoscience information for the mining sector and other industries. Funding constraints were identified as a challenge, and Dr. Alake assured the agency of potential intervention. He emphasized the importance of NGSA’s work in providing critical data for decision-making and encouraged the agency to explore ways to become self-sustaining.
The Minister also convened with the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) to deliberate on the agency’s accreditation and certification of mining professionals. Funding challenges were addressed, with Dr. Alake pledging to ensure budgetary allocations for the agency. He urged COMEG to explore creative solutions for financial sustainability and emphasized the importance of their role in maintaining quality standards in the mining sector.
Dr. Alake’s visits to these agencies underline the government’s commitment to modernising and improving the mining sector. By advocating for innovation, efficiency, and financial sustainability, the Minister is championing reforms that will contribute to the sector’s growth and development. As the agencies work towards addressing the challenges highlighted during the Minister’s visit, they play a crucial role in shaping the future of the mining industry in Nigeria.
