Senator Natasha Urges Senate to Prioritize Environmental Protection

Natasha, the newly sworn-in Senator representing Kogi Central, wasted no time in urging the Senate to prioritize policies that would protect host communities from environmental degradation. This call came in response to a motion raised by Senator Osita Ngwu from Enugu West, which sought to investigate the causes of the declining revenue from solid mineral development in the country. Senator Natasha emphasized the need to address environmental degradation, involve host communities, and conduct advanced seismic surveys.

In her passionate speech, Senator Natasha highlighted the importance of considering the environmental impact of resource extraction. She warned that if the Senate ignored the cries of communities affected by pollution and failed to protect the environment, Nigeria could face a situation similar to the Niger Delta region, where land and water are heavily polluted. She urged her fellow Senators to expand their focus beyond revenue generation and develop policies that safeguard the environment.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan also drew attention to the lack of compensation for the host communities of the National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) in Okehi LGA, whose land was taken for the project in the 1970s. She stressed the need for a comprehensive seismic survey to facilitate effective mineral exploration and update Nigeria’s outdated list of natural resources.

It is clear that Senator Natasha is committed to addressing environmental degradation and ensuring the well-being of host communities. Her call for proactive policies and consideration of the environmental impact of resource extraction is a step in the right direction. By prioritizing the protection of the environment, Nigeria can avoid the devastating consequences experienced in other regions. It is crucial for the Senate to take heed of Senator Natasha’s plea and work towards sustainable development that benefits both the economy and the environment.
