Following the loss of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon over two decades ago, Nigeria is facing the potential forfeiture of three additional local government areas (LGAs) to its Francophone neighbour. The recent brutal attack by Ambazonian separatists on the Beletge community in the Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State has prompted international concern and calls for government intervention.

Mr. Peter Akpanke, the House of Representatives member representing Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu Federal Constituency, has strongly denounced the ruthless assault, which resulted in the tragic death of a local traditional ruler, HRH Chief Ogweshi Francis. Additionally, the separatists abducted 29 individuals from the community, leading to fear and displacement among the affected residents. A significant number of Nigerians have fled the area in search of refuge, underscoring the urgent need for support and protection for the victims.

Mr. Erasmus Ekpang, the Commissioner for Information, stressed the traumatizing impact of the attacks and underscored the necessity for government assistance to alleviate the suffering of the affected communities. Notably, the Ambazonian separatists have extended their violent activities into neighbouring territories, including the LGAs of Boki and Etung, heightening the need for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population.

The gravity of the situation has prompted the mobilization of Joint security forces, including the police. Commissioner of Police, Cross River State, CP Augustine Grimah, confirmed that comprehensive operations have been initiated to address the situation and restore calm in the area.

Mr. Richard Inoyo, Country Director of the Citizens’ Solution Network, echoed the urgency for government intervention and support, emphasizing the substantial impact of the separatists’ attacks on communities in Cross River and Nigeria as a whole. The plea for swift action from the Federal Government and the Cross River State Government to provide security and humanitarian relief to the affected areas is a critical and pressing concern.

The notable absence of the Nigerian Military to protect these communities has further imperilled the besieged LGAs, resulting in mass displacement and severe disruption of livelihoods. Urgent medical support and humanitarian assistance are immediately required to address the suffering of the affected population, including children, pregnant women, elderly citizens, and the injured.

In light of the escalating crisis, the call for international intervention and support remains crucial in addressing the ongoing conflict between Ambazonian separatists and local communities in Nigeria. It is imperative for the Nigerian government and its representing officials to prioritise the security and humanitarian needs of the affected areas, ensuring the protection and well-being of the citizens.

The imminent threat of losing more territories to Cameroon underscores the urgent need for decisive action and collaborative efforts to safeguard the affected communities and mitigate the devastating impact of the violent attacks. The Nigerian President and Governor of Cross River State are implored to act swiftly and provide the necessary assistance and security to the people in the affected LGAs. It is a collective responsibility for all Nigerians to support humanitarian and medical efforts to address the urgent needs of the affected communities and prevent further atrocities from occurring.
