The Geological Society of Nigeria to Launch New Magazine to Promote Research and Information
The Geological Society of Nigeria (GSN) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of its inaugural publication, ‘The Geologist’. This exciting magazine aims to demonstrate the Society’s commitment to advancing the geology profession by sharing valuable information to mentor the next generation of geologists, promote research, and address challenges in the field.
Mr Uba Sa’idu Malami, co-founder and President of the Society, has disclosed that ‘The Geologist’ will be unveiled on Monday, 18 December. He also revealed that the Society is working on establishing a digital and print geological library called ‘Geoscience Africa’. This initiative will provide access to over 20,000 geoscience publications for practicing geologists, students, enthusiasts, and prospective geologists worldwide.
Malami emphasized the development of digital access for GSN members and in-house fellows, connecting them to geological e-libraries globally. He further explained that the Geoscience Africa project is a significant literary milestone and will be complemented by the launch of a newsletter to initiate the book-drive for geological digital and print media.
Furthermore, the GSN has outlined plans for the National Geology Week 2024, an event dedicated to celebrating geoscience in Nigeria. This weeklong event aims to provide a platform for geoscientists, educators in geoscience, and enthusiasts to come together, explore the wonders of the science, and engage in various educational activities throughout the week.
Malami also expressed keenness to expand the scope of geology to include water and resource management, geohazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and their impact on various aspects of society. He encouraged professionals in the geosciences to support the GSN and participate in the National Geology Week 2024.
The GSN’s initiative is poised to establish the Society as the foremost geoscience resource platform in Africa through collaboration with publishers of geology books across the continent and worldwide. Ultimately, the Society aims to become the repository of geological information in Nigeria.
The upcoming launch of ‘The Geologist’ and the Geoscience Africa project represent significant strides in advancing the field of geology, promoting research, and nurturing the next generation of geologists. The GSN’s dedication to fostering knowledge exchange and providing access to valuable resources is commendable and is poised to make a meaningful impact on the geology profession.
