The maritime industry is currently the subject of extensive discussion with regards to the imperative of harnessing the vast potential of the ocean and advancing maritime tourism. During the silver jubilee of the League of Maritime Editors (LOME) in Lagos, experts underscored the necessity of tapping into the blue economy through a focus on biodiversity, deep sea mining, cable line activities, and maritime tourism.

Dr. Charles Okorefe, a lecturer at the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), underscored the absence of initiatives for ocean exploration, deep sea mining, and maritime tourism in Nigeria. He called attention to the success of marine tourism in nations such as The Gambia and the Caribbean, where it serves as a significant source of national income. Dr. Okorefe emphasized the potential for job creation and economic growth through Nigeria’s marine resources.

In an effort to address challenges confronted by operators at ports, Frank Ogunojemite, President of the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON), urged government intervention to address issues such as the erratic service of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Ogunojemite also expressed concerns about the financial burden placed on importers and freight forwarders as a result of these challenges.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, lauded the theme of the event and highlighted the ministry’s endeavors to harness the potential of the marine sector. He conveyed the ministry’s dedication to creating job opportunities, promoting social development, and contributing to economic growth through the exploration of the nation’s marine resources.

The discussions at the event brought attention to the yet untapped potential of Nigeria’s blue economy and the prospects for growth in ocean exploration and maritime tourism. The necessity of collaboration between the government, private sector, and relevant stakeholders was stressed as a paramount factor in realizing the full potential of the marine sector. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, it is imperative to explore avenues for sustainable development and economic growth through the exploration of the ocean and the promotion of maritime tourism.
