Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Kogi State Leads to Impounding of Truckloads of Coal

The Kogi State Government has taken firm action to address illicit mining activities within its jurisdiction. The Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, has initiated a crackdown on unauthorized miners operating in the state. This initiative forms part of the state government’s efforts to enforce directives aimed at halting illicit mining operations.

In a recent development, the state government confiscated trucks loaded with coal that had been illegally mined in Ankpa LGA. Engr. Abubakar Bashir Muhammed, together with officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, State Security Devices, Nigeria Police, the Taskforce on Illegal Possession of Light Arms, and Kogi State Vigilance Service, spearheaded the enforcement efforts to maintain order in the state.

Engr. Abubakar Bashir Muhammed highlighted that the primary purpose of the crackdown is to ensure compliance with federal government policies and contribute to revenue generation. He stressed the importance of registered mining activities approved by the Federal Government, urging miners in the state to register with the Ministry. Nevertheless, despite these pleas, illicit mining activities have persisted, causing adverse impacts on local communities.

The Commissioner issued a stern warning to all illicit mining companies and individuals involved, urging them to cease their operations immediately. He emphasized that the law would catch up with anyone found engaging in illegal mining, with prosecutions awaiting offenders.
