The Kogi State Government has made significant progress in curbing illegal mining by apprehending 10 miners operating unlawfully in Ankpa Local Government Area. This action follows the implementation of Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive against illegal mining throughout the state, spearheaded by the Kogi State Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms and Other Related Crimes.

Bashiru Gegu, the Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, conveyed this development during a press briefing in Ankpa on Monday. Through the collaborative efforts of various agencies such as the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Department of State Services, DSS, and local vigilantes, the government has seized over 50 trucks engaged in the unauthorized transportation of coal in the area.

Gegu emphasized the significance of complying with Federal Government policies and contributing to revenue generation. Despite previous appeals for miners approved by the Federal Government to register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, illegal mining activities have continued to pose a threat to communities in Kogi State. As a response, Gegu stressed the complete prohibition of illegal mining in the state, cautioning that offenders will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

The chairman of the task force, Friday Sani Makama, echoed the view that the current administration is determined in its resolve to eliminate illegal mining activities. Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive to cease illegal mining demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding the state’s natural resources for the welfare of its inhabitants. Makama emphasized the necessity for all miners in Kogi State to operate within the parameters of the law, affirming his role in ensuring the enforcement of the governor’s directive.

The crackdown on illegal mining in Kogi State highlights the government’s diligence in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the state’s natural resources. With an unwavering dedication to this mission, the state is striving to ensure that all mining activities align with legal frameworks and regulations.
