NSCDC Apprehends Suspected Vandals and Illegal Miners in FCT
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, recently made significant arrests, capturing two individuals suspected of vandalising railway infrastructure and 11 others involved in illegal mining activities. According to Comfort Okomanyi, the Command Spokesperson, the railway vandals were apprehended by operatives of the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure unit of the command for intentionally damaging rail tracks and traffic lights in the Wuye Area of the territory. In collaboration with the Nigerian Army, the Command also successfully apprehended 11 suspects engaged in illegal mining activities at Izom, a community located at the boundary of FCT and Niger State.
Addressing the media while parading the suspects, FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, emphasized the proactive measures taken by the Command, stating that these efforts would serve as a deterrent to other criminals within the territory. He reasserted the Command’s commitment to combating various forms of criminality, particularly vandalism of Critical National Assets, illegal mining activities, and other offences within the FCT. Odumosu made it clear that there is no intention to back down in the fight against these crimes, as he vowed to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
Emphasizing the serious implications of economic sabotage through illegal exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources, the Commandant highlighted the significant threat posed to the ecosystem and the substantial financial losses incurred by the country as a result of illegal mining activities. He also issued a stern warning to vandals of critical national assets, one chance syndicate, scavengers, and kidnappers, informing them that such criminal activities would no longer be tolerated within the FCT jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the NSCDC emphasized its unwavering dedication to ridding the FCT of criminalities, with a promise to tirelessly identify and apprehend individuals or groups engaged in activities that undermine the safety and prosperity of the citizens. The statement issued by the Command also outlined that the apprehended suspects are currently under investigation and will subsequently face legal charges. They are cooperating with authorities and providing important information that will determine their level of culpability or affiliation with other criminal syndicates notorious for illegal mining operations within the FCT.
The NSCDC’s swift and decisive action in apprehending these suspects is a testament to their commitment to upholding law and order within the FCT.
