As today, 18th December 2023, has been designated as International Migrants Day by the United Nations, the Daily Trust is pleased to announce a series of articles to be featured throughout the week, focusing on the topic of migration and the millions of migrants worldwide. To inaugurate this series, we present an extensive list of 18 movies, fiction books, and academic works that delve into the complex concept of migration.

The selected fictional works encompass a wide range of narratives, from individual experiences to the broader impact of migration on communities. Noteworthy among these is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanah,” which chronicles the journey of a young Nigerian woman who immigrates to the United States for education, broaching issues of race, identity, and belonging. Also of significance is John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” which portrays the migration of the Joad family during the Great Depression in search of a better life. These works present diverse perspectives and compelling insights on the subject of migration.

In the non-fiction realm, “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson documents the migration of African Americans from the southern United States to northern and western cities between 1915 and 1970. In a similar vein, Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History” delves into the impact of environmental changes on various species, including humans, and the migrations forced by these changes. These works offer valuable historical and scientific perspectives on the intricate phenomenon of migration.

The collection of featured movies includes “No Dogs or Italians Allowed,” “Human Flow,” and “Samba,” each presenting a unique portrayal of the migrant experience in diverse global contexts. From poignant dramas to insightful documentaries, these films illuminate the realities faced by migrants seeking better opportunities and the challenges they confront along the way.

Furthermore, we anticipate the release of an upcoming movie titled “Footprints of Home” in December 2024. Produced by The Migrant Resource Centre, the film promises to delve into the challenges, sacrifices, and triumphs of a Nigerian family’s migration amidst economic hardships and political instability.

As we contemplate the diverse array of movies, books, and academic works on migration, we encourage our readers to share their insights and recommendations. The complexities of migration are vast, and each of these works offers a unique perspective that contributes to a deeper understanding of this global phenomenon.
