NSCDC arrests 11 illegal miners and two vandals in Abuja
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has made significant arrests, taking 11 illegal miners and two suspected vandals of railway infrastructure into custody. This development was confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, Comfort Okomanyi, in Abuja.
The operatives of the critical national assets and infrastructure unit of the command apprehended two railway vandals for allegedly vandalizing rail tracks and traffic lights in the Wuye Area of the territory. In collaboration with the Nigerian Army, the NSCDC arrested 11 suspects involved in illegal mining activities at Izom, a community located at the boundary of FCT and Niger.
During the suspects’ parade at the command headquarters, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu highlighted that the proactive measures taken by the command would serve as a deterrence to other criminals within the territory. He emphasized the commitment to combat various forms of criminality, particularly vandalism of critical national assets, public infrastructure, and illegal mining activities in the FCT.
Mr. Odumosu stressed the serious threat that economic sabotage through illegal exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources posed to the ecosystem and host communities, resulting in the loss of billions of naira to illegal miners. He assured that the apprehended suspects were being investigated and would subsequently be charged to court.
Furthermore, Mr. Odumosu warned vandals of critical national assets, illegal miners, and other criminal syndicates that such activities would not be tolerated within the FCT jurisdiction. Emphasizing the commitment to rid the FCT of criminals, he stated that the command remains diligent to identify and apprehend individuals or groups engaged in criminal activities.
In light of the ongoing investigation of the apprehended suspects, active efforts are being made to apprehend their masterminds who are still at large. The commandant emphasized that the suspects are currently assisting with useful information that will determine their level of culpability or affiliation with other criminal syndicates notorious for illegal mining operations within the FCT.
As always, the NSCDC is committed to ensuring the safety and prosperity of citizens of the FCT. Efforts are being redoubled to apprehend individuals or groups engaging in criminal activities that can undermine the security and well-being of the people.
