Crackdown on Illegal Mining Operations in Kogi State Leads to Arrest of 10 Miners and Seizure of Over 50 Coal-laden Trucks
In a bid to combat illegal mining activities in Kogi State, the state government recently took significant action by apprehending 10 miners who were allegedly operating without permission in Ankpa Local Government Area. This decisive step forms part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal mining operations and enforce Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive to curb this unlawful practice across the state.
The arrests were announced by the state Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashiru Gegu, during a statement in Ankpa. He disclosed that, in collaboration with the Kogi State Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms and Other Related Crimes, the government has also seized over 50 trucks loaded with coal that were being transported illegally. This crackdown on illegal mining activities was carried out with the support of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes.
Gegu stressed the significance of abiding by federal government policies and contributing to revenue generation. He emphasized the government’s repeated calls for miners approved by the federal government to register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, which have been consistently disregarded by illegal operators. The commissioner firmly declared the complete prohibition of illegal mining in Kogi State and issued a stern warning to all individuals and companies engaged in such unlawful activities.
Furthermore, the Director General of the Kogi State Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms and Other Related Crimes, Elder Friday Sani Makama, echoed Gegu’s sentiments and announced an end to the leniency previously shown towards illegal mining operations. He emphasized the current administration’s unwavering commitment to apprehending and prosecuting anyone involved in illegal mining in Kogi State. Makama emphasized that Governor Yahaya Bello’s firm stance against illegal mining reflects the need to prevent the exploitation of the state’s natural resources for personal gain.
