The Nigerian government has introduced a special holiday treat by offering complimentary train rides and cutting public bus fares by half across the country, easing the financial burden of holiday travel for domestic travellers. This move, announced on Wednesday, will be in effect from Thursday to 4th January, allowing people to visit family and hometowns without the extra strain of high transportation costs typically associated with this time of year. This decision, which has been approved by President Bola Tinubu, was made in collaboration with luxury bus companies operating nationwide. Air travel has not been included in this arrangement as the focus is primarily on the general public.

Transport Minister Sa’idu Alkali has emphasized that the reduced bus fares and free train rides will enable all Nigerians to partake in the joy of the holiday season without the burden of excessive transportation expenses. The initiative has been well-received by the National Union of Road Transport Workers, with spokesperson Segun Falade confirming that bus operators will implement the fare subsidies as agreed.

The festive season, particularly December, is the busiest time for travel in Nigeria, witnessing a surge in air, road, and railway passengers. This offering from the Nigerian government is a clear attempt to alleviate the financial strain on the people during this time, which is often marred by high transport costs.
