Free Train Services and Discounts for Commuters during Festive Season Announced
The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has made public the commencement of complimentary train services nationwide in observance of the festive season. This undertaking follows the authorization by President Bola Tinubu to offer support to commuters during the Christmas and New Year season. The free train services will be in operation from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
Commuters are strongly advised to secure their complimentary tickets through the online e-ticketing platforms as tickets will not be dispensed at any of the Corporation’s Train Stations. It is imperative to note that no commuter will be permitted to board the train without a valid ticket.
Furthermore, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has guaranteed the public that arrangements for the 50% reduction in road transport fares on 22 key routes across the country have been finalized. This reduced fare will also be applicable from December 21, 2023, onwards.
The entities participating in the Federal Government’s initiative to alleviate the transport burden of 5 million Nigerians include GIG (God is Good), Chisco Transport, Young Shall Grow, God Bless Ezenwata, and Area Motor. These companies will be providing discounted fares to commuters during the festive period.
Minister Alake stressed that the objective of the initiative is to alleviate the financial strain of high transport costs on Nigerians and is part of a Presidential intervention to decrease the cost of inter-state road transport. He also disclosed that the Federal Government will collaborate with the structured Luxury Buses Association of Nigeria to implement the discounted fares on 22 routes across the country.
In terms of security, the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will play a crucial role in the new security architecture at mining sites. There will be cooperation with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to ensure the safety and security of these areas.
One of the primary aims of these initiatives is to provide relief to Nigerian commuters during the festive season, making travel more accessible and affordable for people across the country.
As the festive season approaches, these measures are a welcome relief for many Nigerians, providing them with more accessible and affordable travel options. The government’s commitment to easing the burden of transport costs during this time is a positive step towards ensuring a more enjoyable and stress-free holiday season for everyone.
