Federal Government Finalizes Plans for 50% Discount on Christmas Travels, Says Minister Alake

The Federal Government has confirmed that arrangements have been finalised for its initiative to subsidise travel by 50 per cent for Nigerian citizens during the festive season. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development and the chairman of the Presidential Inter-ministerial Committee on Subsidised Yuletide Inter-state Transport, assured the public that all necessary logistics have been put in place for the implementation of this scheme.

During a press briefing held in the presence of Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris, and Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Dr. Alake emphasised that the objective of this intervention is to significantly reduce the cost of inter-state road transport by providing a 50 per cent discount. Additionally, free railway commuting will be available from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.

Following a series of discussions with the ministers of Interior and Transportation, Dr. Alake restated the government’s readiness to roll out this initiative, which is designed to alleviate the financial strain of high transport expenses for Nigerians over the holiday period.

Minister Alkali expounded on the government’s plans to collaborate with the Structured Luxury Buses Association of Nigeria to offer discounted fares on 22 select routes across the country, with the implementation phase scheduled to commence on Thursday, December 21, 2023. The specific routes where the discounted fares will apply are expected to be announced in the near future.

Furthermore, Minister of Interior, Hon Olubunmi Ojo, highlighted the essential role that the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will play in this new security framework, emphasising the unwavering partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in ensuring the safety of mining sites.

This initiative is a commendable effort by the government to make travel more affordable for citizens during a time when many people are looking to spend the holidays with their loved ones. The collaboration with industry associations and the focus on ensuring security at mining sites demonstrates a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of the public and the industry.
