The Nigerian Youth: Resilience in Challenging Times
In a recent public engagement, I had the privilege of engaging in a discussion on the status of Nigerian youth with Tunde Bakare, the Editor-in-Chief of the reputable Kwara Tabloid. Our dialogue prompted me to contemplate the ambitions and challenges faced by today’s young individuals. Subsequently, I was honoured to be invited as the Guest Speaker at the 10th Annual Lecture and Award Ceremony of the Kwara Tabloid. Despite the absence of a specific topic, I opted to address the survival instincts of Nigerian youth in the current dynamic climate.
The Survival Instincts of the Nigerian Youth
The typical Nigerian youth has been molded by a survival instinct from a young age. Over the years, the narrative for Nigerian youths has undergone significant changes. From the prospect of free education and a promising future to the harsh realities of economic recession and corruption, young Nigerians have encountered substantial hurdles.
Economic mismanagement and corruption have, over time, plagued the nation, resulting in a decline in educational standards and an increase in unemployment. These societal issues have had a profound impact on the youth, leading to frustration and a sense of despair. Despite these challenges, Nigerian youths have displayed remarkable resilience and ingenuity. They have embraced entrepreneurship and technology, propelling change and demanding improved governance.
The Challenges Faced by Nigerian Youths
Youth despondency in Nigeria is primarily rooted in economic downturn, poor education standards, unemployment, population explosion, low standards of living, and inappropriate education curriculum. These factors have contributed to troubling outcomes such as internet fraud, cultism, and drug abuse among young people. Additionally, there has been a growing trend of Nigerian youths seeking to emigrate to other countries in search of better opportunities, leading to brain drain and the loss of potential leaders in the country.
Positive Outcomes of Youth Resilience
In response to the challenges they face, Nigerian youths have exhibited resilience and creativity. Many have embraced entrepreneurship, resulting in job creation and innovation across various sectors. Moreover, the emergence of the creative economy, sports development, and ICT innovation has empowered young Nigerians to pursue alternative paths to success. Furthermore, the influence of young people in the political arena has been significant, as evidenced by their active participation in the 2023 general elections.
The Significance of Survival Instincts
When effectively harnessed, survival instincts can drive positive outcomes such as perseverance, resilience, and innovation. They are also fuelled by a desire for self-improvement and personal growth. However, it is crucial to address the negative ramifications of survival instincts, such as involvement in illicit activities and exploitative practices.
Recommendations for Empowering Nigerian Youths
Empowering Nigerian youth necessitates the promotion of education, skills development, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and mental health awareness. Addressing socio-economic disparities, combating discriminatory practices, and fostering open dialogue and mentorship are also vital in nurturing the potential of young Nigerians.
In conclusion, Nigerian youth have showcased remarkable resilience and resourcefulness in the face of daunting challenges. By acknowledging the importance of education, entrepreneurship, and social activism, we can cultivate a supportive environment for young people to thrive and contribute positively to the nation’s development.
