The prospect of being surrounded by a group of resolute troublemakers from various parts of the world was initially intimidating, but my recent attendance at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC) in Gothenburg, Sweden proved otherwise. Contrary to my expectations, I encountered investigative journalists who were not only dedicated professionals, but also amiable and approachable individuals. This unexpected revelation has sparked a new perspective on the global community of investigative journalists.

As an investigative journalist from Sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a high risk of persecution for exposing corruption and inefficiency, the fearlessness and camaraderie displayed at the conference were particularly inspiring. Despite the prevalent accounts of corruption and human rights violations in my home country, I was surprised to find that these issues were not unique to Nigeria, but rather a global phenomenon.

Furthermore, the event not only facilitated networking and cultural exchange, but also imparted valuable lessons that have significantly influenced my approach to investigative journalism. As a result, I have shared these insights with my colleagues during an in-house training session at TheCable, an independent and esteemed African news platform.

The conference notably highlighted the increasing reliance on technology in investigative journalism. This tech-driven approach involves the use of various digital tools and open-source platforms to gather and analyse data, conduct remote interviews, and map out information. It emphasized that investigative journalism encompasses a diverse range of innovative techniques, beyond traditional fieldwork.

Another key lesson underscored the importance of familiarising oneself with the myriad of investigative tools available, such as GoogleEarth, TrueCaller, and hidden cameras, all of which contribute to the thoroughness and credibility of investigative work.

Furthermore, the sessions shed light on the significance of exploring public websites and overlooked resources as valuable sources of exclusive documents and data for investigative stories. In particular, topics related to environmental journalism were highlighted as a growing focus within the field, emphasising the need to allocate resources towards environmental protection and conservation. The panels discussed compelling environmental investigative stories, including a cross-border investigation into criminal networks operating in the Amazon rainforest.

Moreover, the conference emphasised the need for innovative storytelling techniques, such as using maps, infographics, and motion pictures to engage a global audience. It also highlighted the financial incentives and professional recognition that accompany impactful investigative journalism, such as grants, awards, fellowships, and international opportunities.

In conclusion, the GIJC2023 in Sweden provided a transformative experience, offering invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of investigative journalism. The lessons learned have not only enhanced my professional capabilities but have also reshaped my perception of the investigative journalism community and its global impact. I am eager to implement these lessons in my future investigative endeavours and contribute to the positive evolution of the field.
