Bayelsa Government Warns Against Protest Disrupting Aiteo’s Oil Production
The Bayelsa State Government has issued a stern warning against the planned protest that could potentially disrupt oil production at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29, which is operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration. The protest, set to occur in Nembe Basambiri, has prompted the government to alert security agencies and take preemptive action to avert any disruption.
The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Chief Ayiba Duba, underscored that activities of the youth and chiefs’ council in the area have been suspended, and the government will not tolerate any breach of peace. The planned protest is deemed as a threat to public order, safety, and the revenue generated from oil derivation.
The state government has emphasized the significance of maintaining peace in Nembe Basambiri and throughout Bayelsa. It has explicitly stated that any attempt to disrupt the activities of Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company will not be tolerated, as it would not only impact the company, but also undermine public order and potentially lead to the destruction of oil and gas infrastructure in the state.
Oil production at OML 29 has been severely impacted by oil theft and vandalism, resulting in a two-year production halt. Aiteo, the indigenous oil firm that acquired the asset, opted to change its export method to address the challenges it faced.
The government has stressed that the planned protest constitutes an affront to the authority of the state and is viewed as sabotage to the Nigerian economy. It has earnestly cautioned those involved in the protest to desist from their plans, as there will be consequences for any unruly conduct. Furthermore, all security agencies in the state have been placed on red alert to prevent any disruption in Nembe and the entire state.
As of present, the management of Aiteo has yet to provide a response to the situation.
It is evident that the Bayelsa State Government is adopting a resolute stance to uphold peace and safeguard the economic activities within the state. It is imperative for all parties involved to adhere to the directives of the government and strive towards peaceful and amicable resolutions to any grievances. By addressing these issues with a proactive and vigilant approach, the state aims to ensure stability and progress in its oil production sector.
