Rising Incidents of Vandalism and Illegal Mining in FCT Lead to 82 Arrests by NSCDC
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has informed that a total of 82 suspects involved in vandalism and 22 illegal miners were apprehended in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between August and December. The information was shared by NSCDC FCT commandant, Olusola Odumosu, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. The arrests were made in connection with various offences, including theft of manhole covers, vandalism of critical national assets, illegal mining, and destruction of public and railway property.
Odumosu reported that 20 suspects were detained in connection with the theft of manhole covers and vandalism of critical national assets, while five were apprehended for the alleged vandalism of electrical cables. In addition, 14 individuals were arrested for the destruction of public property and two for theft of televisions.
It was further disclosed that 28 suspects were picked up for their involvement in railway vandalism and the destruction of other critical national assets, while 11 were detained for illegal mining activities in the region. The NSCDC also took action against three private guard companies (PGCs) for operating without a license and failing to renew expired licenses.
The NSCDC committed to intensifying efforts to crack down on vandals, illegal PGC operators, and miscreants within the FCT in the coming year. The swift response in apprehending these individuals demonstrates the government’s determination to maintain law and order, protect critical national assets, and ensure the safety and security of public infrastructure in the FCT.
Vandalism and illegal mining pose serious threats to public safety and essential facilities, resulting in significant economic losses. All stakeholders, including government agencies, private companies, and members of the public, must collaborate to combat these criminal activities.
The NSCDC’s efforts to address these issues are commendable, and it is imperative for the general public to remain vigilant and assist in maintaining the integrity and security of public assets. It is crucial for all to work together to uphold the rule of law and protect collective resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
