Africa’s Most Exciting Infrastructure Projects to Keep an Eye On

In various regions across the African continent, numerous large-scale infrastructure projects are currently underway, attracting the attention of international stakeholders. These projects are strategically designed to promote intra-African trade and investment, with the potential to stimulate local economies, generate employment opportunities, and bolster energy security. Furthermore, these initiatives are projected to exert a significant influence on both regional and global energy markets, shaping the African energy sector in 2024 and beyond.

One notable project that has garnered considerable interest is Angola’s Lobito Corridor. This transregional infrastructure undertaking aims to establish connections between the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), northwestern Zambia, and global trade markets through Angola’s Port of Lobito. Supported by the African Development Bank, Africa Finance Corporation, the US, and the European Union, the project is particularly focused on risk reduction, financial mobilization, and successful execution. Additionally, the project is poised to address logistical and infrastructural hurdles in the mining sector of southern Africa, benefiting Angola, the DRC, and Zambia, while also reflecting a growing Western interest in Africa’s mineral reserves.

Another noteworthy project is Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, which is anticipated to become the largest refinery in Africa with a production capacity of up to 650,000 barrels per day. Inclusive of a power station, a deep seaport, and a fertilizer unit, the complex is expected to mitigate chronic fuel shortages in Nigeria, lower petroleum costs, and position the country as a regional refining hub.

Uganda’s Lake Albert Development is also making waves with two upstream oil ventures set to commence production in 2025. This development also encompasses the construction of the 1,443-km East African Crude Oil Pipeline, which will facilitate international exports and play a crucial role in Uganda’s oil production.

Equatorial Guinea’s Punta Europa Gas Mega Hub is yet another project of significant interest. This flagship initiative is undergoing substantial expansion and is dedicated to fostering intra-African gas trade, including plans to commercially exploit gas from nearby fields through offshore pipelines and tapping into trans-border wet gas fields.

Lastly, the 225 KW Regional Interconnection Line, part of the Gambia River Basin Development Project, represents a pivotal energy infrastructure initiative spanning Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea-Conakry. Its objective is to facilitate a regional energy exchange and bolster energy resilience across West Africa.
