Nigerian Government Takes Action Against Illegal Mining in Solid Mineral Industry

The Nigerian government has revealed its new plan for the solid mineral sector, including measures to combat illegal mining. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, announced the plan during an interview on NTA Weekend File. The government aims to increase the contribution of mining to the country’s economy by implementing strategies such as granting mining licenses within 30 days and providing a 60-day grace period for illegal artisanal miners to regularize their operations and pay royalties and taxes. Additionally, a special police force will be established to tackle illegal mining nationwide. The minister emphasized that this force will not only focus on mining but also cover the marine and blue economy sectors. The force will be under the control of the Ministry of Solid Minerals, with its personnel reporting to ministry officials. Alake also highlighted the government’s commitment to streamlining the application and licensing process for potential investors, aiming to make it more efficient and less time-consuming. The government plans to create a one-stop shop that will provide clear guidance on the application process and requirements. The minister stated that legitimate mining licenses should be issued within 30 days of completing the application process. The government’s efforts to combat illegal mining and improve the solid mineral sector are crucial for the country’s economic growth and development.
