The Decline of Human Life in Nigeria and the Urgent Need for Change
In light of the recent visit by members of the North Central Governors’ Forum to Plateau state, in response to a devastating attack that claimed the lives of over 200 individuals, it has become increasingly evident that there is a pressing need for collective action against wanton violence in Nigeria. The delayed response of the governors of these states raises questions about whether political considerations take precedence over the preservation of human life.
The prevalence of violence in the region, such as the pillaging of communities, murder, and kidnapping, has had a significant impact on agricultural practices and food security. The inaction of the governors in the face of this crisis indicates a lack of respect for the sanctity of human life, a fundamental right guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution. The failure to effectively respond to the Christmas Eve attack in Plateau, despite the presence of a special task force, raises serious concerns about the commitment to preserving human life in the country.
The lack of regard for human life extends beyond the actions of political leaders, as evidenced by instances such as the tragic death of a university student in Ogun state. The normalization of human bloodshed in Nigeria is a troubling trend that undermines the fundamental value of human life. This national malaise demands urgent attention and concerted efforts to restore respect for human life in the country.
As the government works to address the economic challenges facing the nation, the issue of insecurity must be given top priority. The fear and uncertainty created by the prevailing insecurity have far-reaching implications for both local and foreign investors, as well as the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. To effectively combat the scourge of insecurity and rejuvenate respect for human life, a collaborative effort involving all segments of society is imperative.
In conclusion, it is essential for all stakeholders, including government, community leaders, religious leaders, and parents, to play an active role in addressing the crisis of insecurity and upholding the sanctity of human life. The moral dilemma confronting Nigeria necessitates a collective resolve to safeguard the lives of its citizens and harness its economic potential. The devaluation of human life cannot be allowed to persist in a country with such immense promise and potential.
