The Nigerian government is preparing to co-host the upcoming African Natural Resource and Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS) with global leaders. The second edition of the summit is scheduled to be held in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from 31st October to 2nd November.

According to a statement signed by AFNIS Media Executive, Fatima Wabi, the theme of the summit is “Towards A Just Transition” and is anticipated to bring together government agencies, private companies, and visionary minds with a common mission.

The primary focus of the summit is to address the challenges of energy transition and formulate a low-emission development trajectory tailored for Africa’s unique circumstances. Additionally, the summit aims to facilitate discussions on promoting sustainable economic growth for mining and energy-dependent nations to promote strategic and bilateral development of the continent’s extractive and energy sectors.

Africa presently accounts for less than three per cent of global carbon emissions, indicating the region’s relatively lower carbon footprint per capita. With many African countries committing to achieving net zero emissions by midcentury, the continent must outline a clear path for sustainable development. This was the focus of the last summit held in 2022, which deliberated on strategies for a greener and more sustainable Africa.

The upcoming summit is endorsed by the Federal Ministries of Mines and Steel, Power, Petroleum, Environment, and Foreign Affairs, and is expected to be attended by representatives from over 30 African nations. Throughout the three-day summit, industry experts, government officials, academics, and business leaders will examine the intricacies of achieving a just transition within the mining and energy domains, including integrating cleaner energy sources into Africa’s energy mix.

The event aims to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, case studies, and experiences from other African countries, showcasing their progress and fostering insights, collaboration, and actionable strategies that align with Africa’s sustainable development goals.

In conclusion, the AFNIS summit is a testament to the commitment of African nations to sustainable development and a green economy. Through partnerships and collective action, it is possible to pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for Africa.
