Government to Establish Special Police Force to Tackle Illegal Mining

The government is planning to create a special police force to tackle illegal mining in the country, according to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake. This police force, called the ‘Mining Police Force’ or the ‘Mine Police’, will not only focus on the mining sector but also cover marine and the blue economy. The minister revealed this during an interview on the NTA Weekend File, where he discussed the government’s plans to boost the contribution of mining to the economy.

To address the issue of insecurity in the mining sector, the government will collaborate with various security agencies and establish a dedicated police force. The Ministry of Solid Minerals will have control over this force, and its personnel will report to the ministry.

Mr Alake highlighted the connection between illegal mining and the rise of banditry in Nigeria. He stated that intelligence reports have revealed the direct involvement of illegal miners in the increase of banditry in several parts of the country. In response to this, the government, in collaboration with security agencies and the National Security Adviser, will create the Mining Police Force or the Mine Police.

In addition, the ministry has given illegal artisanal miners a 60-day grace period to regularize their operations, become compliant with regulations, and pay royalties and taxes to the government. The aim is to provide an opportunity for these miners to organize themselves and contribute to the formal economy.

Furthermore, the ministry is committed to streamlining the application and licensing process for mining licenses. Investors can expect to receive their licenses within 30 days, as the ministry plans to overhaul and expedite the process.

By implementing these measures, the government aims to combat illegal mining, enhance security in the mining sector, and promote the formalization of artisanal mining activities.
