Situated in North Central Nigeria, Kwara State is positioning itself to emerge as a key player in the solid minerals production within the country. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq recently announced the establishment of five Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) by the state government to acquire viable mining sites. Furthermore, the Governor underscored the presence of commercially viable mineral resources in each of the state’s 16 local government areas, and extended an invitation to potential investors to capitalize on this natural wealth.

This announcement was made during the 5th Annual Conference of the National Council on Mining and Mineral Resources Development (NCMMRD) in Ilorin, attended by delegates representing all 36 states of Nigeria. The conference focused on the theme “Minerals and Metal: A Panacea for Economic Growth and Diversification”.

Governor AbdulRazaq emphasized the significance of economic diversification and expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to this cause. He advocated for a reduced reliance on oil, recognizing the untapped potential of the solid mineral sector and other industries.

Noteworthy attendees at the event included the Minister of State for Mines and Steels Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari, federal parliamentarians, members of the Kwara State Executive Council, and mining professionals.

Minister Uba Maigari highlighted the vital role of steel in modern infrastructure, its contribution to job creation, community empowerment, and economic diversification. Despite the challenges facing the industry, such as aging infrastructure and uncertain global market conditions, he called for collaborative efforts and innovative strategies to revitalize the steel industry, and announced intentions to develop a roadmap for Nigeria’s steel industry.

Additionally, there was an advocacy for miners to prioritize partnerships with local communities and ensure their benefit from resource extraction, operating within the framework of the existing Federal Mining Act. This initiative garnered support from State Commissioner for Solid Mineral Development, Abdulqowiyu Olododo.

Furthermore, Alhaji Teslim Jimoh, representing Dangote Group, stressed the importance of security in the mining sector, and urged the Federal government to enhance safety measures for both local and foreign miners.

The initiative undertaken by Kwara State to harness its natural minerals and attract investments in the mining sector is a significant stride towards economic growth. The government’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders and ensuring that local communities are involved in the development process is commendable. It is evident that the mining sector holds immense potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic diversification.
