Illegal Mining Activities Linked to Ibadan Explosion: Concerns Raised Over Explosives in Apartments
In the wake of the recent detonation in a residential area of Ibadan, concerns have been raised by former Oyo State House of Assembly member, Barrister Muideen Olalekan Olagunju, regarding the potential presence of explosives in apartments rented by individuals working for illegal miners.
The explosion, which resulted in loss of life, injuries, and significant property damage, has prompted Olagunju to issue a cautionary statement about the potential storage of explosives in accommodations rented by those involved in illegal mining activities in Ibadan.
The focal point of Olagunju’s apprehension is Sawane Youssouf, a Malian national who reportedly leads a group of illegal miners operating in the state. Youssouf, along with three others, is said to have registered a mining company, SDYB International Company Limited, with the intention of engaging in mining activities in Oyo State. Allegations suggest that their mining operations are primarily concentrated in the Iwere-Ile area of Iwajowa Local Government Area.
According to Olagunju, Youssouf is believed to have numerous individuals working under him in the Bodija area of Ibadan, and there are suspicions that these workers may possess explosives in their rented apartments. He has urged the government to take immediate action to identify the locations of these individuals and secure any explosives in their possession.
The former lawmaker has also expressed his disappointment at the failure of both government and local communities to prevent the stockpiling of explosives by Youssouf. He highlighted negligence and lack of oversight, stating that the proximity of the explosion site to the Government Secretariat is particularly concerning.
Furthermore, Olagunju has disclosed that Youssouf’s incorporation of a mining company in 2004, as documented by the Corporate Affairs Commission, provides further evidence of his involvement in mining activities. He has called for a thorough investigation into the operations of SDYB International Company Nigeria Limited and the potential complicity of security operatives in facilitating the movement of explosives.
In light of the devastating impact of the explosion, Olagunju has emphasized the immediate need for action to address the presence of explosives in residential areas, particularly those linked to illegal mining activities. The potential threat posed by the accumulation of explosives in populated areas underscores the urgency of securing these locations and preventing further harm to lives and properties.
