The Prohibition of Consent Letters for Miners in Kogi State
The Kogi State Government has recently taken a strong stance against illegal mining in the region by implementing a ban on the issuance of consent letters to miners without prior approval. This decision was announced by the Kogi State Commissioner For Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru, during a press briefing held at the Glass House, Government House after a meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector.
Moreover, the Commissioner emphasized that moving forward, all Community development agreements must undergo thorough vetting before any mining activities can commence in the State. He reiterated the State Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring order in the mining activities within the State. Additionally, he reassured the public that the government’s efforts are directed towards safeguarding the lives of individuals residing near mining activities, preserving the environment, and ensuring that only authorised miners engage in lawful mining activities. Moreover, communities will be safeguarded and will benefit from the mining activities conducted in their vicinity.
The decision to ban the issuance of consent letters without approval is a crucial step in combating illegal mining activities and promoting responsible mining practices in Kogi State.
