A committee established by President Bola Tinubu is resolute in its efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources and confront the insecurity that has impeded the sector’s growth. Under the leadership of Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, the committee is focused on formulating strategies to preserve the nation’s solid minerals, marine economy, and forests.

During a comprehensive engagement with various stakeholders, Mr Alake underscored the imperative of curbing illegal mining, deforestation, and other illicit activities jeopardizing Nigeria’s natural resources. The committee intends to broaden its membership to include prominent security agencies, in order to devise holistic security measures that will be presented to the president for implementation.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, previously lamented the heightened insecurity in the mining industry, which has constrained its revenue potential. He also highlighted the presence of over $700 billion worth of mineral deposits in Nigeria, whose exploitation has been hampered by illegal mining activities. Furthermore, Mr Alake alleged that illegal miners were contributing to banditry and terrorism in the country.

Other ministers enlisted in the committee comprise Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola; Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal; and Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim.
