Cracking Down on Illegal Mining: EFCC’s Stand Against Economic Sabotage
Recently, Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has articulated the organization’s resolute determination to address the issue of illegal mining across Nigeria. This initiative is aimed at fostering economic growth and reducing the associated risks within this sector.
During the Conference of the National Council on Mining and Mineral Resources Development (NCMMRD) in Ilorin, Olukoyede underscored the EFCC’s pivotal role as a major combatant against illegal mining. He underscored the Commission’s endeavors to purify the mining sector in Nigeria, in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Michael Nzekwe, the Ilorin Zonal Commander of the EFCC, conveyed Olukoyede’s message and emphasized the grave threat posed by illegal mining to both the local and national economy, as well as to the safety of individuals. He expressed deep concern over the widespread exploitation of resources in Kwara State by artisanal miners, underscoring the potential for these resources to sustain the economy and foster self-reliance if properly managed.
While recognizing the support of the government of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State in the fight against corruption and illegal mining, the EFCC urged all stakeholders to unite in this endeavor. They issued a stern warning to illegal miners, cautioning that the EFCC will take decisive action against anyone found engaging in economic sabotage.
The EFCC assured the public of their unwavering dedication to eliminating illicit activities and corruption throughout the country.
This announcement serves as a reminder to individuals and groups involved in illegal mining that their actions will not go unnoticed or unpunished. It also underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards and abiding by the law for the benefit of the nation’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
