Former Nigerian lawmaker, Hon. Teejay Yusuf, has highlighted the significant security risk posed by illegal mining activities in Nigeria, particularly in light of the recent tragic explosion in Ibadan. He has underscored the urgent necessity for a well-coordinated national response, led by the Office of the National Security Adviser and various security agencies, to effectively address this pressing issue.

During a statement in Abuja, Yusuf emphasized the peril that widespread illegal mining presents to Nigeria’s security, economy, and citizens. While he commended Governor Seyi Makinde and other leaders in Oyo state for their exemplary leadership during the crisis, he also called for greater action at the federal level to tackle the threat posed by illegal mining, especially the involvement of foreign nationals and their collaborators within Nigeria.

The former lawmaker stressed the crucial need for resolute inter-agency cooperation among security agencies to counter the security threat posed by illegal miners, particularly their involvement in the illicit possession of firearms, ammunitions, explosives, tax evasion, and other illegal activities.

Yusuf also drew attention to the potential economic advantages of legitimate mining activities, noting that the Ojoo Gemstones Market near Ibadan holds significant potential for revenue generation, employment, and national economic diversification. However, he cautioned that these opportunities are being exploited by unscrupulous businessmen and illegal miners, both foreign and domestic.

While acknowledging Governor Seyi Makinde’s swift response to the explosion, which included covering hospital bills for the injured and providing accommodation for displaced persons, Yusuf also praised the efforts of security agencies, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for their prompt deployment of manpower to the explosion scene.

In conclusion, Yusuf emphasized the urgent need to address the illegal drainage of Nigeria’s economy by foreign nationals and unscrupulous Nigerian citizens involved in illegal mining activities. He called for decisive action to curb illegal exportation of solid minerals, non-payment of taxes and duties, and the alleged sponsorship of armed bandit groups by these individuals.

The situation in Nigeria requires a coordinated and vigilant response from all stakeholders, from local leaders to federal authorities, to effectively address the threat of illegal mining. The tragic explosion in Ibadan serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to protect the country’s security, economy, and the wellbeing of its people.
