Urgent Call to Implement Explosives Regulations in Wake of Ibadan Explosion
Following the tragic explosion in Ibadan on January 16, the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) is advocating for the complete implementation of regulations pertaining to the importation and handling of explosives within the mining sector. The President of NMGS, Prof Akinade Olatunji, emphasized the significance of adhering to these regulations to prevent future incidents of a similar nature.
The explosion in Ibadan, attributed to the storage of explosive materials by illegal miners, resulted in the loss of five lives, 77 injuries, and the destruction of 58 buildings. In response, Prof Olatunji emphasized the pivotal role of regulations in averting such tragedies and called for the engagement of various stakeholders, including the Mines Inspectorate Department of the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development, the Directorate of State Security (DSS), and the anti-bomb squad of the Nigerian Police Force.
Underlining the necessity for stringent enforcement of mining regulations, Prof Olatunji stressed that sanctions must be imposed on those who contravene these regulations to discourage illegal mining and prevent improper handling of explosives. He asserted that the absence of consequences for infractions only fosters illegality and urged for the apprehension, successful prosecution, and imprisonment of individuals involved in illegal mining activities.
Additionally, Prof Olatunji highlighted the vast potential of Nigeria’s mining industry and urged the government to enlist the expertise of professionals to propel its growth. He emphasized the need to harness the knowledge and experience of trained geologists and mining engineers to bring about the requisite reforms in the sector.
In a related statement, the President of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Dele Ayanleke, underscored the significance of adhering to regulations when handling explosives. He pointed out that the regulations mandate obtaining a permit from relevant authorities, specifying the quantity of explosives, and monitoring their movement by the anti-bomb unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
As we contemplate the devastating repercussions of the Ibadan explosion, it is imperative that we acknowledge the importance of strict compliance with regulations governing the handling of explosives in the mining sector. The introduction and implementation of stringent measures in accordance with these regulations are vital to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of individuals involved in mining activities. It is our collective responsibility to prioritize compliance with these regulations and safeguard the well-being of our communities.
