Recently, the Federal Government of Nigeria conveyed a strong message to illegal miners during a meeting with licensed mineral holders, laterite, and sand operators in Kaduna State. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, underscored the importance of adhering to proper licensing procedures before commencing operations. The Government also expressed its commitment to implementing stringent actions against illegal mining activities.

The Minister emphasized the necessity for operators to not only obtain a mining license but also secure a permit to mobilize to the site. This permit serves as an introduction to the state and local governments, as well as the communities through their traditional ruler, in order to facilitate smoother mining activities.

Mr. Kutman Ali, the acting Zonal Mines Officer, conveyed the Minister’s message to the operators in Kaduna State, urging them to promptly settle their outstanding debts. It was revealed that miners and operators across the country owed the Federal Government over N2 trillion, with Kaduna State alone accumulating a debt exceeding N300 billion.

Dr. Alake outlined the Minister’s plans for the mining sector in 2024 and beyond during the meeting. He specifically highlighted the revitalization of the Special Mines Surveillance Taskforce (SMSTF) to combat illegal mining and ensure the timely payment of royalties and taxes.

The firm stance of the Nigerian government against illegal mining comes in response to the prevalence of unlicensed mining activities throughout the country, posing a significant threat to the environment and resulting in substantial revenue losses for the government.

In conclusion, the Minister’s meeting with mineral holders and operators signifies the government’s unwavering commitment to enforcing regulations within the mining sector. As efforts are made to crack down on illegal mining and recoup outstanding debts, it is essential for all stakeholders to adhere to proper licensing procedures and financial obligations to ensure the sustainable and responsible development of Nigeria’s mining industry.
