US and Nigeria Form Partnership to Boost Mining Sector Development
Nigeria and the United States have recently established a joint working group with the objective of enhancing the development of the mining sector in Nigeria. This collaboration was formalized during a meeting between the Nigerian Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, and the senior adviser to the U.S. president on energy and infrastructure, Amos Hochstein. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ‘Investing in Africa Indaba’ conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to a statement from the minister’s media aide, Segun Tomori, the meeting aimed to bolster cooperation between Nigeria and the U.S. During a recent visit to Abuja on February 1, the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission, David Greene, expressed the commitment of the U.S. to collaborate with Nigeria in training its security agencies to ensure the protection of mining sites.
Additionally, the U.S. has demonstrated a keen interest in investing in Nigeria’s mineral extraction and processing. Hochstein emphasized the U.S.’s willingness to work with Nigeria in unlocking investments in the mining ecosystem, including infrastructural development, technical assistance, and clean energy options.
In response, Minister Alake expressed gratitude for the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the U.S. and underscored the potential benefits of the collaboration in mining development for both countries. He also acknowledged the need for reforms to create a conducive environment in the sector.
The establishment of the joint working group aims to facilitate the timely exchange of information and create the necessary modalities for the partnership. This collaboration between Nigeria and the U.S. holds promise for the future advancement of the mining industry in Nigeria and signifies a strengthened bilateral relationship between the two countries.
