Federal Government to Establish Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence

The Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to establish the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence, with the goal of providing a comprehensive solution to address the needs of investors in the solid minerals sector. This initiative is a vital component of the government’s continuous endeavours to revitalize the mining industry and ensure its substantial contribution to the nation’s economic growth.

Dr. Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development of Steel Development, disclosed this information during the inauguration of the Committee for the Establishment of the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence in Abuja. She underscored the Centre’s significance in advancing the Ministry’s role in the Nigerian economy by fostering collaborations among key departments.

The objectives of the Mining Centre of Excellence encompass facilitating the requirements of investors in the solid mineral sector, enhancing the utilization of the Decision Support System, and promoting knowledge exchange, best practices, and capacity development within the mining sector. Dr. Ogbe conveyed her confidence in the Centre’s capacity to operate as a focal point for international partnerships and collaboration in mining investment.

Furthermore, Dr. Dele Alake, the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has pledged complete support for the activities of the CoE to ensure the fulfillment of its mandate. The establishment of the CoE will facilitate cooperation among various departments and agencies, such as the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, Mining Cadastre Office, Mines Inspectorate, and the Ministry of Steel Development.

The Committee responsible for establishing the CoE comprises nominated members from different departments and agencies of the Ministry, with the Director of Investment Promotion and Minerals Trade Department serving as the chairperson.

The establishment of the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence demonstrates the government’s dedication to creating a conducive environment for sustainable growth and development in the mining sector.
