“The Impact of Our Environment on Health” – Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako’s Insights
In a recent assembly with the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Minister of State for Environment Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako underscored the essential correlation between the environment and human health, emphasizing the significant role the environment plays in determining our overall well-being.
During the session, Dr. Salako stressed the imperative to concentrate on the various environmental factors that directly impact the health of the populace. He highlighted that the Ministry of Environment is in the process of fortifying its Planning, Research and Statistics Department (PRS) to carry out comprehensive research on issues affecting the environment.
“As a society, we must formulate strategic and evidence-based solutions to raise awareness and educate the public about environmental concerns such as flooding, pollution, erosion control, land degradation, deforestation, and climate change,” Dr. Salako remarked. He also underscored the importance of promoting tree planting, protecting forests from illegal logging, and preserving wildlife and ecosystems.
Demonstrating the ministry’s dedication to tackling environmental challenges, Dr. Salako assured the visiting President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Prof. Akinade Olatunji, of the ministry’s willingness to collaborate with organizations to implement enduring solutions to environmental issues in Nigeria and beyond.
In response, Prof. Olatunji confirmed the society’s readiness to partner with the ministry and contribute to accomplishing its objectives. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive approach, rather than superficial measures, to address environmental issues and stressed the importance of collaboration in creating an enabling environment for sustainable solutions.
Moreover, Prof. Olatunji extended an invitation to the Hon. Minister of State to the society’s forthcoming conferences, showcasing the society’s commitment to fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing. He shared details of the 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition in Jos in 2024, as well as the 39th International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry and Health scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria.
