Plans Underway for One-stop Shop to Support the Mining Industry
The Nigerian government has announced its intention to establish the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence (CoE) in order to better meet the needs of investors in the solid minerals sector. This move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the contribution of the mining sector to the nation’s economy.
Dr Mrs Mary Ogbe, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development/Steel Development, revealed details about the project during the inauguration of the Committee for the Establishment of the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja. The CoE aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for the mining sector, providing solutions to investors and stakeholders in the industry.
Dr Ogbe emphasized the importance of establishing the Center of Excellence in driving the Ministry’s contribution to the growth of the Nigerian economy. She highlighted that the CoE will promote collaboration among various key departments of the Ministry, facilitating the efficient use of the Decision Support System (SS) and promoting knowledge-sharing, best practices, and capacity building within the mining sector.
The permanent secretary also expressed optimism about the potential of the CoE to serve as a focal point for international partnerships and collaboration in the field of mining investment. She confirmed that the minister of solid minerals development, Dr Dele Alake, is committed to providing full support to the CoE to ensure the successful realization of its mandate.
The CoE will facilitate collaborations among important departments of the Ministry, including the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency NGSA, Mining Cadastre Office, MCO, Mines Inspectorate, Office of the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Ministry of Steel Development, and the Office of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development. The committee responsible for the establishment of the CoE comprises nominated members from various departments and agencies of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and will be chaired by the director of Investment Promotion and Minerals Trade Department of the Ministry.
This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing the support provided to the mining sector, with the establishment of the CoE expected to play a crucial role in driving the growth and development of Nigeria’s solid minerals industry. It reflects the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment and sustainable development within the sector.
