The marked increase in illegal mining activities in Nigeria has garnered the attention of Senator Ekong Sampson, a representative of Akwa Ibom South senatorial district at the National Assembly. Senator Sampson has raised concerns about the unauthorized mining operations, asserting that they not only undermine the nation’s mineral resources but also pose significant security threats across the country.

In a statement released by his Media Aide, Mr. Samuel Udoma, Senator Sampson expressed his commitment to conducting thorough investigations into the mining sector to protect the interests of the country. As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, he emphasized the need to review and streamline mining activities to reposition the solid minerals sector.

The Senate had previously passed resolutions mandating the Solid Minerals Committee to probe into the declining revenue from solid minerals development, examine the impact of illegal mining, and review the privatization programs related to mining and mineral resources since 1999. The senator condemned the collusion of certain Nigerians with foreign entities to exploit the country’s mineral wealth without contributing to national revenue.

Senator Sampson also raised concerns about the security risks associated with illegal mining, citing a recent explosion in Ibadan caused by irresponsible and illegal mining behavior. He stressed the need to address the disjointed and unregulated nature of mining operations, which have now become a significant threat to lives and property in the country.

In light of these issues, the committee chairman pledged to take decisive action to eliminate illegal mining. He also announced plans to conduct roundtable discussions with relevant agencies, industry players, and other stakeholders to develop effective strategies for repositioning the sector.

Despite facing resistance from some industry players who have disregarded the committee’s invitations and even threatened legal action, Senator Sampson remains steadfast in his commitment to uncovering the truth and implementing necessary legislative reforms.

The senator’s passionate stance on combatting illegal mining and safeguarding the nation’s mineral resources underscores the urgency of addressing these pressing issues. His dedication to upholding the integrity of the mining sector and ensuring national security serves as a catalyst for change in the fight against illegal mining activities in Nigeria.
