Cracking Down on Illegal Mining: Nigeria’s Mission
The Nigerian Government has adopted a firm stance against the pervasive issue of illegal mining activities that have significantly impacted the solid minerals sector. Engr. Ajayi Gbenga, the Zonal Mining Officer for the South-west, conveyed this during an informative workshop held in the capital of Oyo State, under the title: ‘Illegal Mining, An Act of Economic Sabotage’.
Engr. Ajayi underscored the extensive prevalence of illegal mining in Oyo State and the entire country, leading to economic sabotage through substantial revenue loss and severe environmental degradation. He emphasized that these illicit activities have detrimental effects on the national economy, impeding both local and foreign investors in the sector.
In response to the damaging effects of illegal mining, the Nigerian Government has established the Presidential task force known as the ‘Solid Mineral Special Task Force, SMSTF’. This task force has been entrusted with the vital responsibility of mitigating the alarming spread of illegal mining activities in the South-West region and across the country.
The recent workshop served a dual purpose, combining Stakeholders Training and a Sensitization/Enlightenment campaign on the topic of Illegal Mining as an Act of Economic Sabotage with Training on Soft-Computing Models for Crusher Selection and Optimum Rock Fragmentation: Application of Crushware and Fragware.
It is evident that the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, along with the establishment of the SMSTF, demonstrate the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing illegal mining and its widespread repercussions. The workshop served as a pivotal step towards raising awareness and educating stakeholders on the adverse effects of illegal mining, aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at diversifying the economy.
As Nigeria strives to eradicate illegal mining, it is imperative to recognize the significance of adhering to regulations and promoting responsible mining practices. By taking proactive measures to combat illegal mining, the nation can safeguard its natural resources, protect the environment, and ensure sustainable economic development for the benefit of all.
In conclusion, the resolute stance of the Nigerian Government to eliminate illegal mining is a commendable effort towards fostering a robust and ethical solid minerals sector. By prioritizing the crackdown on illegal mining, Nigeria is taking a significant stride towards promoting lawful and sustainable mining practices, upholding environmental integrity, and driving positive economic growth.
