The Chairman of the Plateau Council of Traditional Rulers and Emirs, Da Jacob Buba, addressed the issue of widespread poverty in communities hosting mining sites in Plateau during the 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) in Jos. He expressed concern over the dominance of influential individuals in the mining industry, which has resulted in impoverishment of the host communities.

In addition, he called for mining companies to prioritize the well-being of local communities in their operations and underscored the vulnerability of these communities to insecurity caused by mining activities.

The Governor of Plateau, Caleb Mutfwang, echoed these concerns and emphasized the environmental degradation and health risks faced by residents of mining communities. He also highlighted the issue of criminal activities in the sector and the encroachment of residential areas under the guise of artisanal mining.

The governor emphasized the necessity of good governance in the mining sector and stressed the importance of collaboration between government agencies and the private sector. He noted that Plateau had enacted laws to regulate the mining sector and attract private investment.

Professor Akinade Olatunji, President of NMGS, identified quackery and underutilization of professionals as challenges facing the mining sector in Nigeria. The NMGS conference aimed to address these challenges and provide solutions for the geosciences sector.

Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, stressed the significance of NMGS in providing technical services for the solid minerals sector. He encouraged mining scientists to enhance their skills and compete at a global level, while also laying a strong foundation for the next generation of mining engineers and geologists.

The conference, themed “Emerging global perspectives, trends and sustainable development of minerals and energy resources,” is set to conclude on March 22 and has seen the bestowal of honorary fellowships on Governor Mutfwang and the Gbong Gwom Jos.

The concerns raised by traditional rulers and government officials reflect the challenges faced by mining communities in Plateau. Responsible mining practices, environmental protection, and community well-being should be central considerations in the development of the mining sector. Collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and professional organizations is crucial for addressing these challenges and ensuring sustainable development of mineral and energy resources in Nigeria.
