The Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, delivered a compelling address at the annual conference of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) on the critical importance of nurturing and mentoring a new generation of mining professionals. Dr. Alake underscored the necessity of cultivating younger cadres to sustain the advancement of the nation’s mining sector.

During the conference, Dr. Alake urged the NMGS to adopt a proactive approach in raising awareness among secondary school students about the opportunities and significance of pursuing careers in mining sciences. He emphasized the crucial role of educators and counsellors in guiding students towards non-traditional disciplines such as geology and mining professions.

Represented by the director-general of the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO), Engr. Obadiah Nkom, Dr. Alake expressed his admiration for the invaluable services provided by mining engineers and geologists in the realms of exploration and extraction. He highlighted the pivotal role played by these professionals, without whom mining operations would present formidable challenges.

Furthermore, the minister’s special assistant on media, Segun Tomori, conveyed Dr. Alake’s call for the NMGS to collaborate with the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) in sharing new discoveries. This partnership aims to bolster the NGSA as a repository of precise and comprehensive data, essential for guiding potential investors in making well-informed decisions about the mining sector.

In addition to advocating for the cultivation of the next generation of mining professionals, Dr. Alake also stressed the importance of enhancing the skills and knowledge of current mining professionals. He underscored the need for technical instruments that align with the Pan-African Reporting Code (PARC) established by the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), in order to improve the scientific reporting system and earn global respect from industry counterparts.

Dr. Dele Alake’s address serves as a reminder of the significance of investing in the future of the mining sector by empowering and guiding aspiring young professionals. By addressing the need for greater awareness and education about mining sciences, along with reinforcing the skills and expertise of current professionals, the minister’s vision for the industry is one of sustainability, growth, and global recognition.
