The government of Benue has taken a decisive measure in regulating mining activities within the state. After a meeting with the Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter in Makurdi, Governor Hyacinth Alia has officially suspended all mining operations in the state until a comprehensive compilation of miners’ data has been completed. This directive aims to address urgent issues related to illegal mining and the safety of residents living in affected areas, particularly in Kwande.

Governor Alia has tasked the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee, MIREMCO, with the responsibility of promptly documenting data of all miners in the state. This revalidation exercise is in response to reports of security threats and the contamination of water sources for communities in the affected areas. Furthermore, the governor has emphasized the importance of upholding the wellbeing of the people and increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue.

During the meeting, Governor Alia made it unequivocally clear that the state government will not condone any form of illegality. He firmly asserted the administration’s prerogative to protect the lives and property of the people, signaling a strong stance against illegal mining activities. The governor also called upon security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to ensure that necessary measures are taken to address these concerns.

In collaboration with the state Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, who also serves as the chairman of MIREMCO, a comprehensive checklist has been developed to scrutinize the mining sector in Benue. This strategic approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to effectively regulating mining activities and curbing illegal practices in the state.

In response, Chairman of the Nigeria Miners Association in Benue, John Tersugh, expressed the association’s willingness to cooperate with the governor in order to overhaul the mining sector and establish a framework for responsible mining practices. Additionally, the Mining officer in the Federal Ministry of Mining and Solid Minerals, Mr. Simon Ogwu, has pledged support to the state government in its efforts to sanitize the mining sector in Benue.

At the meeting, two miners, Benjamin Nyior and Dennis Tarhemba, emphasized the need for a conducive working environment that enables them to carry out their mining activities effectively. They highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of multiple taxation within the industry and the provision of necessary mining equipment to assist them in contributing to the revenue profile of the state.

In light of these developments, it remains evident that the Benue Government is taking robust steps to ensure the responsible and regulated practice of mining activities in the state. This comprehensive approach signifies a concerted effort to safeguard the interests of both the residents and the mining community, whilst ultimately contributing to sustainable resource management.
