In an effort to address the issue of insecurity within the mining sector, the Federal government of Nigeria has officially launched a new security initiative known as the ‘mines marshal’. This specialized unit, comprised of 2,220 personnel, has been assigned the crucial responsibility of clamping down on illegal mining activities and enforcing the nation’s mining laws.

At the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, announced that the mines marshal will be deployed nationwide, covering all 36 states as well as the federal capital territory. The initiative places strong emphasis on the utilization of advanced technology in their operations, and will involve special operatives from various security agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the army, working in collaboration to ensure the success of the program.

Alake highlighted the importance of addressing insecurity in the mining sector in order to enhance revenue generation and contribute to national economic development. With the long-term goal of increasing the mineral sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP to at least 50 percent, he emphasized that a secure operating environment is vital in achieving this objective.

The Minister also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the President in forming an inter-ministerial committee, consisting of the ministries of solid minerals, marine blue economy, interior, defence, police affairs, and environment. This committee, chaired by Alake, played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the mines marshal initiative as part of a comprehensive strategy to combat insecurity in the mining sector.

The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Abubakar Audi, expressed confidence in the ability of the newly formed mines marshals to effectively safeguard national assets and infrastructure, particularly in the realm of solid minerals. He emphasized the importance of close coordination between the marshals and state mine inspectorates, as well as the ministry, to ensure the successful execution of their mandate.

The introduction of the mines marshal signifies a significant stride towards addressing the security challenges that have afflicted the mining sector. Through the establishment of a dedicated security force equipped with the necessary training and resources, the government is demonstrating its commitment to creating a safe and conducive environment for mining operations.

This new development serves as evidence of the government’s proactive approach in combating illegal mining activities and promoting sustainable growth in the mineral sector. As the mines marshal commences its operations nationwide, it is poised to play a pivotal role in protecting Nigeria’s valuable mineral resources and propelling the sector towards greater prosperity and economic contribution.
