Resolving Mining Disputes: Creating Thematic Maps to Address Conflict Areas – The Director General
The Director General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, Obadiah Nkom, has announced plans to develop thematic maps aimed at mitigating conflicts in the mining industry. These maps will help identify and address areas of contention related to mining cadastre sites, such as burial grounds, rivers/streams, military lands, pipelines, and farmlands. Nkom expressed the need for these maps during the 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE), organised by the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) and held at the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Jos.
The development of these thematic maps is a response to the ongoing disputes among stakeholders in the industry. According to Nkom, obtaining a mining license does not grant absolute rights over sites like burial grounds or farmlands. As a result, the cadastre office is actively working on creating these maps to address the various conflict areas.
In addition to the thematic maps, Nkom also highlighted the digitalisation of Nigeria’s Cadastre mining system. He highlighted that the industry is rapidly advancing with the introduction and application of the Electronic Mining Cadastre System (eMC+). The goal is to improve the efficiency and transparency of the mining sector through the use of modern technology.
The mining industry’s growth and development are crucial for Nigeria’s economic progress. By addressing the challenges related to mining cadastre sites, the government aims to create a more conducive and peaceful environment for stakeholders in the industry. The implementation of thematic maps and the digitalisation of the mining cadastre system will play a significant role in ensuring sustainable development of minerals and energy resources.
Nkom’s announcement at the international conference reflects the government’s commitment to resolving disputes and improving the regulatory framework of the mining sector. With the development of thematic maps and the adoption of electronic mining cadastre systems, the industry is poised to experience positive changes that will benefit all stakeholders.
As the mining industry continues to evolve, the efforts made by the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office are essential for maintaining a conducive environment for sustainable growth and development. The development of thematic maps and the digitalisation of the mining cadastre system will undoubtedly contribute to the resolution of conflicts and the promotion of responsible mining practices in Nigeria.
