The Federal Government has taken the decision to halt all mining operations within the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus and the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife, Osun. This action is in response to reports of suspected illegal mining activities in the area.

During a meeting with the management of OAU, headed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, announced the indefinite suspension. This decision follows concerns raised by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) regarding the potential risk to the safety and well-being of the institution’s students and staff as a result of these activities.

After NANS and the National Association of University Students, OAU chapter, voiced their concerns, the school management officially lodged a complaint to the appropriate government authorities, leading to further actions being taken.

In response to the reports, the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Mines Inspectorate conducted an on-site assessment and initial investigations at the institution. Based on their findings, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, ordered the cessation of all mining activities, whether legal or illegal, for further investigation.

During discussions with the school authorities, it was discovered that the illegal operators had presented licenses and letters of consent regarding their activities. However, the minister stressed the importance of suspending the activities to authenticate the validity of the documents.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, highlighted the expertise of the university’s geologists and mining professionals, emphasizing the need to establish a research and training facility on mineral resources within the university. This facility would provide support to the university community, the state, and contribute to the overall development of the mining sector.

The university has also applied for an exploration license to engage in lawful activities such as exploration and research on the distribution and quality of mineral resources within the university environs and across the country.

As the government continues its investigations into the alleged illegal mining activities, the immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of the OAU community. The collaboration between the Federal Government and OAU demonstrates a commitment to upholding ethical and legal standards in the mining sector.

The suspension of mining activities within the OAU campus and its environs represents a crucial step in addressing the concerns raised by students and staff. It also reflects the government’s dedication to fostering a safe and secure environment for academic pursuits and research initiatives.
