Combating Crime: Nigerian Army Division Launches Operations Against Kidnappers and Illegal Miners in Oyo
The Nigerian Army’s 2 Division Garrison in Ibadan has undertaken a proactive approach to address the surge in kidnappings and illegal mining activities in Oyo. According to the Division’s acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, the operation, codenamed “Operation Omi Gbona,” was initiated on Tuesday, May 21. This initiative is a response to the growing incidences of kidnapping, illegal mining, armed robbery, and other crimes that have become widespread in the area.
The increased presence of criminal gangs in the South West is attributed to the Nigerian Army’s successful offensive operations against them in the North West and North Central Regions. This has compelled the criminals to seek refuge in the South West, where they continue to carry out their nefarious activities. Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye emphasized the severity of the threats posed by these criminal activities to the security of the region. Furthermore, he highlighted the potential negative impact on the socio-economic activities of law-abiding citizens within the region and the nation as a whole.
The primary objective of “Operation Omi Gbona” is to suppress the freedom of action of criminal elements in the region and restore law and order in support of civil authority. This will ultimately create an enabling environment for socio-economic activities to thrive in the region. As part of this operation, military troops will be deployed around the old Oyo National Park and suspected forests where the criminals are believed to be harboring. It is essential for the public to remain calm upon sighting the movement of military troops and to continue their legitimate businesses, assured that the actions of the troops are in the overall interest of all legitimate citizens of the region and the nation at large.
In light of this development, it is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and co-operate with the security forces. The success of the operation is contingent on the support and collaboration of the public. The prevalence of criminal activities such as kidnapping and illegal mining not only undermines the security of the region but also hinders the socio-economic progress of the nation. Therefore, it is imperative for all citizens to play their part in ensuring the success of “Operation Omi Gbona.”
The Nigerian Army’s decisive action against these criminal activities exemplifies their commitment to maintaining peace and security within the country. The concerted efforts of the security forces, with the support of the public, are vital in combating crime and fostering a safe and prosperous environment for all. It is through such operations and collaborative endeavours that the nation can effectively address the challenges posed by criminal elements and create a more secure and prosperous future for all its citizens.
