The Nigerian Government is steadfast in its commitment to supporting mining companies that prioritize local content in their operations and have a positive impact on the host community through various developmental projects.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, conveyed this message during a recent visit to the Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), an indigenous gold mining company situated in Ilesha, Osun State, South-West Nigeria. The Minister urged mining companies in the country to emulate the international best practices observed at the Segilola gold project as a means to advance the sector.
Dr. Alake expressed his satisfaction with the significant contribution of over 95% Nigerian staff within the company and commended SROL for its commitment to promoting local talent. He encouraged other operators in the industry to follow suit, emphasizing the importance of taking cues from the company’s example, regardless of their local or foreign investor status.
Minister Alake voiced his support for SROL and praised the company’s resilience and innovative approaches to realize its vision in the face of formidable challenges during its inception. He also highlighted the key points of his 7-point agenda aimed at revitalizing the mining sector, which includes prioritising security within mining environments. The Minister disclosed the recent establishment of mines marshals across the country, reporting a noticeable improvement in the operational environment with illegal miners vacating their sites even before official operations commenced.
Furthermore, Alake emphasized the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships with host communities and commended SROL for surpassing its community development targets. He urged mining companies nationwide to follow suit, emphasizing the necessity of creating a safe and conducive operating environment to optimize benefits for all stakeholders, including the government.
Addressing the gathering, Segun Lawson, the CEO of Segilola Resources, described the company as a world-class project driven by Nigerians and called for support from the Federal government to enable its expansion and enhance its contribution to the nation’s economy.
The Nigerian Government’s pledge to support mining companies that champion local content and community development comes as a significant boost for the industry’s growth and sustainability. With the backing of the government, companies like SROL have the potential to not only thrive but also make substantial contributions to the local economy and communities. This move is undoubtedly a step in the right direction towards transforming the mining sector in Nigeria.
