New Safety Measures Implemented by Nigerian Government in the Wake of Mining Site Collapse

In response to the recent collapse of a mining site in Shiroro LGA of Niger State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the necessity of implementing new policies in the mining sector to bolster safety and safeguard investments in the country. This declaration was conveyed during a condolence visit to Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, who has been commended for his prompt and proactive response to the tragedy.

While attending the visit, the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, conveyed President Tinubu’s concern over the unfortunate incident and emphasized the need for measures to avert similar occurrences in the future. The President stressed that going forward, mining companies will be mandated to comply with new policies in order to obtain licensing approval from the Ministry of Solid Minerals. These policies encompass the implementation of local value-addition plans, remediation strategies, and insurance coverage for mine workers.

President Tinubu also took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards the security personnel, community leaders, and members who played an active role in the rescue efforts. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and reassured that every possible effort would be made to ensure the safe rescue of those still trapped.

In response to the government’s proactive measures, Governor Bago offered valuable suggestions for further enhancing safety and security within the mining sector. These suggestions included the formation of cooperatives for licensed miners, improved communication and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the adoption of advanced technology in mining practices, and the implementation of Environmental Impact Assessments prior to commencing mining activities.

Furthermore, Governor Bago expressed his appreciation for the N50 million donation from the President to support the victims of the collapse. He assured that the funds would be promptly delivered to those in need. Following the discussions, the minister and Governor Bago proceeded to visit the injured victims of the tragedy who are currently undergoing treatment at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.

The implementation of these new policies within the mining sector signifies a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and security of mining operations in Nigeria. The collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments are essential in addressing the challenges and vulnerabilities within the industry, and the suggestions put forward by Governor Bago highlight the significance of proactive and inclusive measures in preventing future tragedies.

As the government continues to take decisive steps to prevent mining hazards and improve safety standards, it is imperative for all stakeholders to uphold their commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices. The well-being of mining workers and the preservation of natural resources are paramount, and the adoption of these new policies signifies a significant milestone in prioritising the safety and security of the mining sector in Nigeria.
