Tragic Loss: Nigerian Miners Feared Dead After Pit Collapse

The mining community in Galkogo village of central Niger state’s Shiroro district has been deeply affected by a tragic incident that transpired over a week ago. On June 3, a pit collapsed, leaving at least 20 artisanal miners trapped underground. Despite the valiant efforts of rescuers, hopes of finding the miners alive have dwindled, as the passage of eight long days has led to pessimistic conclusions.

Ibrahim Audi Husseini, the spokesperson for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), conveyed the heartbreaking news to AFP, stating, “All hope is lost of finding the miners alive.” The rescue operation, while not officially called off, faces significant challenges due to the slow and laborious process of removing the boulders that cover the pit. The miners were employing chisels as they painstakingly endeavoured to clear the debris, a task that was further compounded by the lack of adequate equipment.

Initial reports from SEMA indicated that over 30 miners were trapped in the collapse, but this number was later revised down to 20 by the police. Despite the official revision, Husseini remained steadfast in the agency’s assessment, citing testimonies from villagers and fellow miners to support the higher figure. The discrepancy highlights the challenging conditions under which the rescue operation has been conducted.

The situation in Shiroro district has been exacerbated by the constant threat of banditry, with numerous areas in Niger state falling victim to raids and kidnappings. In response to the security concerns, mining activities were banned in several districts, including Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi. However, artisanal miners, driven by the urgent need for sustenance amidst the turmoil, continued their work in defiance of the ban, risking their lives daily.

The tragedy faced by these miners sheds light on the plight of individuals whose livelihoods have been jeopardised by ongoing insecurity. The unsafe conditions and the relentless pursuit of survival in the face of adversity stand as a stark reminder of the resilience and determination exhibited by the affected communities in Niger state. As their struggles persist, it is imperative for authorities to address the root causes of the crisis and provide comprehensive support to those impacted by the devastating consequences of the pit collapse and the broader security challenges in the region.
