In an effort to address security challenges in mining environments nationwide, the Federal Government has deployed an additional 350 Mine Marshals. This action is part of the government’s ongoing initiatives to combat illegal mining activities and enforce mining laws.
The inauguration of the new Mine Marshals took place at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Headquarters in Abuja, with the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, being represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Mary Ogbe.
The minister underscored the vital role of the Mine Marshals in curtailing the activities of illegal miners and ensuring adherence to mining regulations. He emphasized the government’s dedication to purifying the mining sector, which is integral to the nation’s economy.
The recent deployment brings the total number of Mine Marshals in the country to 2,570, following the earlier inauguration of 2,220 Mine Marshals on March 21. These Mine Marshals were specifically trained as a Rapid Response Squad and have been deployed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Dr. Dele Alake commended the effectiveness of the previously deployed Mine Marshals, citing numerous arrests and prosecutions of illegal miners, as well as the conviction of foreign nationals involved in illegal mining operations. He noted the significant progress made in curbing illegal mineral haulage and the activities of unlicensed operators nationwide.
During the passing out parade of the new Mine Marshals, the minister emphasized the importance of collaboration between the marshals and Federal Mines Officers to further enhance the operational effectiveness of the squad. He expressed confidence that this increased manpower would lead to improved sector purification and heightened investor confidence, subsequently attracting more investments to the mining industry.
The minister expressed gratitude to the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the NSCDC for their collaboration in the fight against illegal mining activities. Dr. Ahmed Audi, the Commandant-General of NSCDC, highlighted the rigorous eight-week training undergone by the new Mine Marshals, aimed at intensifying efforts to counter illegal mining operations nationwide.
In his remarks, the Minister of Interior emphasized the need for continuous training and deployment of Mine Marshals to ensure comprehensive coverage of Nigeria’s expansive mining areas. He underscored the potential for the country to harness the economic benefits of its solid minerals sector through enhanced security measures in these areas.
The deployment of the additional Mine Marshals signifies the government’s commitment to safeguarding the mining sector and maximising the economic potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals. It reflects a proactive approach to addressing security challenges and promoting sustainable development in the mining industry.
