The Need for Stricter Regulations on Mining Activities: Senate Takes Action

Following the recent tragic incident at a mining site in Farin Doki Community, Shiroro Local Council of Niger State, the Senate has urged the Federal Government to strengthen the regulation of mining operations in Nigeria in accordance with global standards. This urgent request also encompasses the implementation of heightened security measures to protect mining communities and prevent unauthorised miners from further encroaching.

Senator Sani Musa introduced the motion to address this pressing issue, prompting the Senate to advocate for the prompt passage of the Mine Ranger Bill, which is currently pending before the Upper Chamber. Furthermore, the Senate has entrusted its Committee on Solid Minerals with the task of conducting an on-site assessment of the tragic rockslide incident in order to investigate its root causes and propose necessary interventions.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril, emphasized the importance of Nigeria upholding international best practices in the mining sector, expressing concerns that the country is often exploited due to the lack of proper regulations, particularly by foreign entities.

In a separate development, the Oyo State Government has taken independent action by establishing a dedicated task force to safeguard its mining sites. This decision was made in response to reports of illegal mining activities in various areas within the Oke-Ogun axis. Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed unwavering determination to prevent unauthorised individuals from profiting from the state’s mineral resources.

During a closed-door meeting, Governor Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to collaborating with federal and state security agencies to combat illegal mining in Olorunsogo, Irepo, Orelope, and across the entire Oke-Ogun region. Abiodun Oni, the Director-General of the Solid Minerals Development Agency, highlighted the impending submission of the task force’s formation template for official approval within the next fortnight.

The state government has urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies and other stakeholders to enhance internally-generated revenue through solid minerals. This united effort is intended to facilitate sustainable development while simultaneously curbing criminal activities associated with illegal mining.

In conclusion, the Senate’s call for enhanced regulations on mining activities, together with the Oyo State Government’s establishment of a dedicated task force, represents a pivotal step towards addressing the prevalent issue of illegal mining in Nigeria. These proactive measures aim to safeguard not only the country’s mineral resources but also the well-being of its citizens and communities. With continued efforts and collaboration, it is hoped that Nigeria will achieve sustainable and lawful mining practices for the benefit of all.
